The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence (MOD), and Chairman Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON Board Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa has assured the Director General, DICON Maj Gen Victor Ezugwu of the DICON Board’s support of his efforts to transform the Corporation to an enviable position that would make DICON a pride of all well meaning Nigerians.
The chairman stated this during the recently held 103 Board meeting of DICON held at DICON headquarters Kaduna. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police and other designated members.
According to her, the focus of the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is moving the nation to the next level in all ramifications and the premier industry must be seen to be working on the same page with the government of the day. She further stated that the vision of DICON’s founding fathers must be fulfilled through deliberate efforts.
She therefore charged the DG DICON to be ready to implement changes through collective efforts towards realizing the objective of making DICON the epi centre of the much desired Military Industrial Complex (MIC).
The Chairman who copiously expressed satisfaction with the performance of the DG so far within the short period in office, noted that she was highly optimistic he would deliver on the mandate of the Corporation.
She decried a situation where the nation would continue to be made a dumping ground for finished products and reiterated that the Board was poised to give the DG necessary backing in order to urgently change the current narrative and foster the much desired spillover effect on other sectors of the economy.
On his part, the DG DICON, Maj Gen Victor Ezugwu informed the Board that following his observations on the comparative cost advantage of producing military products in country, he had arrived at the decision to harp more on looking inward towards improved local production. He conveyed that DICON in partnership with Command Engineering Depot was already producing some combat vehicles for the Nigerian Army.
The DICON boss, who disclosed that the vehicles so far produced locally were produced in line with the best international practice with special adaptations not found even in the foreign products. He further notted that scarce foreign reserve was being conserved through the ingenuity of brilliant young Nigerian engineers whose potentials were being harnessed for the benefit of the nation.
Gen. Ezugwu expressed his appreciation to the Board and entire staff of DICON for their invaluably support within the short time he had been at the helm of affairs in DICON. He stated that this enabled modest achievements such as production of armoured vehicle, light and medium, production of dummy rifles for training purposes, inviting Nigerian Machine Tool to assist in proffering solution to some tools problem that can’t be fabricated in DICON; Provision of lunch to all DICON staff among others.
He further thanked the Chairman DICON Board for her unflinching support in the area of providing necessary guidance, stressing that he would not betray the confidence reposed on him by the chairman and other members of DICON Board.
